Accoring to legen, Chang’e an her husban Houyi were immortals living in heaven. One ay, the ten sons of the Jae Emperor transforme into ten suns, causing the earth to scorch. Having faile to orer his sons to stop ruining the earth, the Jae Emperor summone Houyi for help. Houyi, using his legenary archery skills, shot own nine of the sons, but spare one son to be the sun. The Jae Emperor was obviously not please with Houyi’s solution to save the earth: nine of his sons were ea. As punishment, the Jae Emperor banishe Houyi an Chang’e to live as mere mortals on earth.
Seeing that Chang’e felt extremely miserable over her loss of immortality, Houyi ecie to journey on a long, perilous quest to fin the pill of immortality so that the couple coul be immortals again. At the en of his quest he met the Queen Mother of the West who agree to give him the pill, but warne him that each person woul only nee half the pill tobecome immortal.
Houyi brought the pill home an store it in a case. He warne Chang’e not to open the case an then left home for a while. Chang’e became too curious: she opene up the case an foun the pill just as Houyi was returning home. She either accientally or purposely swallowe the pill. She starte to float into the sky because of the overose. Chang’e kept on floating until she lane on the moon.
