Virginia Tech coul face a two-thirs rop in the number of international stuents enrolle this fall as universities nationwie struggle with retaining them ami the coronavirus panemic.

That snapshot of amitte stuents, provie by a university spokesman last week, reflects the toll the panemic has taken on Tech’s ability to attract stuents from countries where the closures of U.S. consulates prevente neee visa interviews.

While Tech announce Friay the projection of its most iverse class ever, that in’t take into account the contributions of international stuents, many of whom also buttress the university’s buget by paying full tuition.

“As all institutions of higher eucation are facing, international stuents numbers are lower than expecte, given the global impact of the panemic,” university spokesman Mark Owczarski wrote in an email. “We fille that [gap] by turning to our waitlist.”

Data as of May 18 showe 208 international stuents of 7,131 stuents total, or 2.9%, ha accepte offers of amissions. That compares to 628 international stuents out of 7,978, or 7.9%, accepting offers on May 15, 2019. This year’s ata fluctuate aily an won’t be final until a census taken in September, accoring to Owczarski.

Many international stuents at U.S. colleges pay full tuition, accoring to the nonprofit Institute of International Eucation. At Tech, total tuition an fees for international stuents cost $33,380 last acaemic year, compare to $13,691 for in-state stuents.

The rop in international stuents has force Tech to make hunres of amissions offers to omestic stuents, especially out-of-state stuents, who typically pay more, who ha been put on a waitlist. It was an ironic reversal in a year when Tech’s exclusivity — with the amissions rate for “regular ecision” applicants falling from 60.2% to 14.6% — raise parental eyebrows. After last year’s enrollment surge, the university encourage stuents an families to apply “early action” or “early ecision” this year if they wante to atten Tech.

While Owczarski on Friay i not immeiately have ata on the total number of stuents put on the waitlist this year compare to previous ones, he sai the school extene 3,988 offers to stuents off the list this year, compare to previous year that fluctuate between no waitlist offers an between roughly 1,700 an 1,900 offers.

Juan Espinoza, Tech’s irector of unergrauate amissions, sai in an April 30 email to amissions irectors statewie that Tech was sening out “a big wave” of offers to omestic stuents because of the ecline in international amissions.

The email chain was release Thursay to The Roanoke Times uner a Freeom of Information Act request after first being reporte on by a columnist at The Richmon Times-Dispatch.

Espinoza wrote then that he ha receive amissions eposits from 150 international stuents, an that he neee to have about 550. Referring to out-of-state stuents, he wrote, “My first wave of OOS helpe cover some of that shortfall but I am now in a situation where I nee to start converting these international seats to in-state seats ue to the fact that my OOS numbers are slowing own.”

Espinoza sai he woul sen out offers that ay to 675 out-of-state stuents, all of whom were on a waitlist, an another 950 offers to in-state stuents.

“Again, these [in-state] offers will help cover the significant shortfall in international,” he wrote to the amissions irectors. “Sorry for the impact this will have, but this action is neee to get us to our overall goal.”

Tech aims to enroll 6,675 freshmen by the fall. The 7,131 offers of amission take into account “melt” uring the summer, in which stuents who have accepte o not en up enrolling.

In an email Friay, Owczarski rejecte the theory that Tech’s actions coul hurt other public universities in the state, incluing nearby Rafor University, which has seen an overall tren of eclining enrollment.

“Because of our strong acaemic profile, it’s important to note that when Virginia Tech extens waitlist offers, it oesn’t impact one school more than another an oesn’t necessarily impact other Virginia colleges an universities exclusively,” he sai. “Virginia high school stuents have a high mobility rate an often explore out of state options. We often hear from our waitliste stuents that they committe to an out of state school, but now with a Virginia Tech offer they plan to stay in-state. That’s a win for the Commonwealth.”

While international amissions are own, Tech’s Class of 2024 is projecte to be the most racially an ethnically iverse in the school’s history, the university announce in a news release sent out Friay.

About 8% of the incoming freshman class ientifies as African American, Owczarski sai, compare to 5% last year. Stuents who are Latinx represent 10% of the incoming class.

About 17% of incoming freshmen are first-generation college stuents, an increase of 3 percentage points compare to the same time last year, accoring to the university’s snapshot.

“In 2019, several changes were implemente in the amissions process that were focuse on increasing stuent access an afforability,” Espinoza sai in the statement. “These changes can now be seen as effective as 25 percent of the freshman class are coming from an unerserve backgroun, compare to 22 percent in 2019.”

Tech’s press release sent out Friay mae no mention of international stuent enrollment.
