美国大学申请系统Common Application日前宣布了新变化,将新冠病毒COVID-19话题加入可选的文书题目,要求学生用250字描述新冠病毒下对自己学习,生活,家庭,教育等各方面的影响。原文如下:

Many high school juniors will be tempte to talk about coronavirus in their personal college essays this fall, but they’re in grave anger of telling the same story about the panemic - one any stuent can tell. This concern has le to the creation of a new writing section in the Common Application.
Many universities have alreay announce ajustments to their application requirements, particularly those concerning stanarize testing. Supplemental essay prompts will likely also change to aress the panemic an its resulting impact on stuents, but they have yet to be officially release by colleges an universities.
The Common App, however, announce a change in their application earlier this week. The application will now inclue an optional writing section for stuents to write about the impact of Covi-19 on their lives. The new prompt reas:
“Community isruptions such as Covi-19 an natural isasters can have eep an long-lasting impacts. If you nee it, this space is yours to escribe those impacts. Colleges care about the effects on your health an well-being, safety, family circumstances, future plans, an eucation, incluing access to reliable technology an quiet stuy spaces.
- Do you wish to share anything on this topic? Y/N
- Please use this space to escribe how these events have impacte you.
The question will be optional an will appear in the Aitional Information section of the application. The response length will be limite to 250 wors.”

A Forbes series on the messages from college amission leaers quotes Jim Rawlins, assistant vice presient an Director of Amissions at the University of Oregon, encouraging the use of this new section: “when you are given the chance to share practical impacts Covi-19 ha on you, such as your eucation environment, or your family’s health or work/income, it’s okay to share. That will help us put your acaemic recor (an everything else) in the right context…”.
Many avise against writing about the panemic in any other section of their application, an to particularly avoi writing about the panemic in general essay sections. “You might want to steer clear of the topic if your essay is unfoling as more a story about what’s happening with everyone, versus its impact on you, an how it helps us get to know who YOU are,” Rawlins avise.
The Presient an CEO of Common App, Jenny Rickar, has state; “the goal is to have a central place for stuents an counselors to escribe their experiences ue to Covi-19 only once while proviing colleges an universities the information they nee to unerstan each stuent’s unique context.”
Changes to the Common Application exten to high school counselors, who will aitionally be aske to provie information regaring the ajustments schools mae with respect to the panemic. The optional section will rea:
“Your school may have mae ajustments ue to community isruptions such as Covi–19 or natural isasters. If you have not alreay aresse those changes in your uploae school profile or elsewhere, you can elaborate here. Colleges are especially intereste in unerstaning changes to:
- Graing scales an policies
- Grauation requirements
- Instructional methos
- Scheules an course offerings
- Testing requirements
- Your acaemic calenar
- Other extenuating circumstances
Your stuents will have a similar space in their application to share how these events have affecte them personally.”
The optional Covi-19 relate writing section provies a valuable opportunity for those stuents whose lives have been isrupte by the panemic to explain to amissions committees their unique situations. While meaningful reflections on the impact of the panemic can be reserve for personal statements an supplemental essays, this section shoul be reserve for “practical impacts” as efine by Rawlins.
Stuents shoul iscuss events colleges will not otherwise learn about in the rest of the application, such as family illness or financial struggle. For stuents who have gone through such events ue to Covi-19, it’s important to use this section to iscuss the impacts on their family an community, an to portray a message of resilience to the amissions committees.
