张翔,1963年12月出生于中国南京市,光电学家,美国国家工程院院士、中央研究院院士、中国科学院外籍院士,美国加州大学伯克利分校ErnestS.KuhChaire教授[1]、机械工程系主任,香港大学校长。
1985年张翔获得南京大学物理学院学士学位;1988年获得南京大学物理学院硕士学位;1996年获得美国加州大学伯克利分校机械工程系博士学位;1996年在宾夕法尼亚州立大学任助理教授;1999年在加州大学洛杉矶分校拿到副教授以及全职教授;2004年进入加州大学伯克利分校任全职教授;2008年发明的纳米隐身衣被美国《时代周刊》列入全球十大科学发现之一;2010年当选为美国国家工程院院士;2012年受聘南京大学校长人才工作顾问;2012年当选中央研究院院士;2015年当选中国科学院外籍院士。2017年12月15日被任命为香港大学第16任校长,任期五年。
张翔的研究主要集中在纳米科学技术,材料物理,光子学和生物技术。
2005年,张翔课题组研制出世界第一块超透镜,首次演示了突破光的衍射极限的成像效应。2007年,超级透镜之研究突破被选为探索杂志评比全球前百大科技发展。
2008年,张翔课题组成功制备出世界上第一次具有光学负折射系数的三维材料;被《时代杂志》选为2008年评比全球前十名科技发现、前五十大年度发明。将光的负折射原理推广到声学,第一次实现了具有负弹性模量的声学超构材料和器件;同时,他主导发展了等离子体光刻技术,成功刻写出纳米级电子电路。
2009年,研制出了世界上第一个表面等离元半导体激光器。
2011年,利用单层石墨烯研制出了世界上最小的超宽带高速光调制器;通过双光子吸收发现了二维半导体材料中的超强激子相互作用及巨束缚能。
