美国目前实行的是副学士、学士、硕士和博士学位制，四个学位分别代表本科和研究生两大类教育的四个不同级别的学术水平。由于副学士学位只是完成两年社区学院的学习或者高等院校前两年的课程 , 课程偏重职业性，学术水准不高，因此美国高等教育所指的 “ 第一学位 ” 通常是学士学位。
下面是具体学位：
一、副学士学位（ Associate Degree ）

学生获得的学位一般是“文学学士 (BA) ”或“理学学士 (BS) ”。文学学士属于人文、艺术或社会科学的领域，如文学、教育、艺术、音乐；而理学学士属基础学科领域，如数学、物理、信息等。

三、硕士学位（ Master Degree ）
硕士学位大体分为偏学术型和偏授课型。偏学术型多授予于 Master of Science学位；偏授课型或应用型多授予Master of Arts学位；双学位 (Dual Degree) 是由两个不同学院分别授予，得到的是两个学位。 其中Major为主修，Minor为辅修。联合学位（Joint Degree）则由两个不同学院联合给予一个学位 。
