在英国，很多高校都开设了广告相关课程，广告课程是英国学生最喜欢的三大热门专业之一。根据清华大学传发表的《中国传媒行业蓝皮书》指出到2010年底，中国媒业与广告产业总产值将达5620亿元。另据德国之声的新闻：中国将很快成为世界第二大广告市场。与广告业蒸蒸日上的发展情形不相适应的是专业广告人才的缺乏。

广告专业有两个分支，一个是与市场营销结合偏重于商科的广告学；另一个是与艺术设计相结合的广告设计制作类专业。
市场营销方向广告专业：强调广告投放、媒体选择。主要课程包括：市场调研、消费心理学、国际营销、公共关系学、广告学等。
艺术设计方向广告专业：强调广告产品的设计、制作与策划。主要课程包括：平面设计、色彩学、CIS设计、平面设计、包装设计、网络设计等。
