Common Application (CA)

Option #1
Some stuents have a backgroun, ientity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application woul be incomplete without it. If this souns like you, then please share your story.
"Ientity" is at the heart of this prompt. What is it that makes you you? The prompt gives you a lot of latitue for answering the question since you can write a story about your "backgroun, ientity, interest, or talent." Your "backgroun" can be a broa environmental factor that contribute to your evelopment such as growing up in a military family, living in an interesting place, or ealing with an unusual family situation. You coul write about an event or series of events that ha a profoun impact on your ientity. Your "interest" or "talent" coul be a passion that has riven you to become the person you are toay. However you approach the prompt, make sure you are inwar looking an explain how an why the story you tell is so meaningful.
Option #2
The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be funamental to later success. Recount a time when you face a challenge, setback, or failure. How i it affect you, an what i you learn from the experience?
This prompt may seem to go against everything that you've learne on your path to college. It's far more comfortable in an application to celebrate successes an accomplishments than it is to iscuss setbacks an failure. At the same time, you'll impress the college amissions folks greatly if you can show your ability to learn from your failures an mistakes. Be sure to evote significant space to the secon half of the question—how i you learn an grow from the experience? Introspection an honesty are key with this prompt.
Option #3
Reflect on a time when you questione or challenge a belief or iea. What prompte your thinking? What was the outcome?
Keep in min how open-ene this prompt truly is. The "belief or iea" you explore coul be your own, someone else's, or that of a group. The best essays will be honest as they explore the ifficulty of working against the status quo or a firmly hel belief. The answer to the final question about the "outcome" of your challenge nee not be a success story. Sometimes in retrospection, we iscover that the cost of an action was perhaps too great. However you approach this prompt, your essay nees to reveal one of your core personal values. If the belief you challenge oesn't give the amissions folks a winow into your personality, then you haven't succeee with this prompt.
Option #4
Describe a problem you've solve or a problem you' like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical ilemma--anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you an what steps you took or coul be taken to ientify a solution.
Here, again, the Common Application gives you a lot of options for approaching the question. With the ability to write about an "intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical ilemma," you can essentially write about any issue that you fin important. Note that you o not have to have solve the problem, an some of the best essays will explore problems that nee to be solve in the future. Be careful with that opening wor "escribe"—you'll want to spen much more time analyzing the problem than escribing it. This essay prompt, like all of the options, is asking you to be introspective an share with the amissions folks what it is that you value.
Option #5
Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparke a perio of personal growth an a new unerstaning of yourself or others.
This question was rewore in 2017-18 amissions cycle, an the current language is a huge improvement. The prompt use to talk about transitioning from chilhoo to aulthoo, but the new language about a "perio of personal growth" is a much better articulation of how we actually learn an mature (no single event makes us aults). Maturity comes as the result of a long train of events an accomplishments (an failures). This prompt is an excellent choice if you want to explore a single event or achievement that marke a clear milestone in your personal evelopment. Be careful to avoi the "hero" essay—amissions offices are often overrun with essays about the season-winning touchown or brilliant performance in the school play. These can certainly be fine topics for an essay, but make sure your essay is analyzing your personal growth process, not bragging about an accomplishment.
Option #6
Describe a topic, iea, or concept you fin so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why oes it captivate you? What or who o you turn to when you want to learn more?
This option was entirely new in 2017, an it's a wonerfully broa prompt. In essence, it's asking you to ientify an iscuss something that enthralls you. The question gives you an opportunity to ientify something that kicks your brain into high gear, reflect on why it is so stimulating, an reveal your process for igging eeper into something that you are passionate about. Note that the central wors here—"topic, iea, or concept"—all have rather acaemic connotations. While you may lose track of time when running or playing football, sports are probably not the best choice for this particular question.
Option #7
Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've alreay written, one that respons to a ifferent prompt, or one of your own esign.
In 2017, it finally happene: the return of the “topic of your choice”. Feare by some, covete by others, an legenary in its existence; regarless of where you stan on the issue, this was a newsworthy aition to the 2017-18 Common App prompt choices. For years, stuents have been treating Prompt #1 (which asks about your backgroun, etc.) as topic of your choice light—it wasn’t exactly the elicious, full-freeom version stuents were looking for, but they were able to make it work in a pinch. Applicants aroun the worl likely let out a big exhale when they saw they coul still serve up a big scoop of Prompt #7 to amissions last year. An this year will be no ifferent.
