The HBS Case Metho

Pioneere by HBS faculty an one of the highlights of the HBS experience, the case metho is a profoun eucational innovation that presents the greatest challenges confronting leaing companies, nonprofits, an government organizations—complete with the constraints an incomplete information foun in real business issues—an places the stuent in the role of the ecision maker. There are no simple solutions; yet through the ynamic process of exchanging perspectives, countering an efening points, an builing on each other's ieas, stuents become aept at analyzing issues, exercising jugment, an making ifficult ecisions—the hallmarks of skillful leaership.

Over 80 percent of cases sol throughout the worl are written by HBS faculty, who prouce approximately 350 new cases per year. Simply put, we believe the case metho is the best way to prepare stuents for the challenges of leaership.

How the HBS Case Metho Works When stuents are presente with a case, they place themselves in the role of the ecision maker as they rea through the situation an ientify the problem they are face with. The next step is to perform the necessary analysis—examining the causes an consiering alternative courses of actions to come to a set of recommenations. To get the most out of cases, stuents rea an reflect on the case, an then meet in learning teams before class to "warm up" an iscuss their finings with other classmates. In class—uner the questioning an guiance of the professor—stuents probe unerlying issues, compare ifferent alternatives, an finally, suggest courses of action in light of the organization's objectives. As you watch a case stuy unfol in class, you'll see stuents oing 85 percent of the talking, as the professor steers the conversation by making occasional observations an asking questions. This classroom interaction is enriche by ninety classmates from iverse inustries, functions, countries, an experiences. Class participation is so important to the learning moel at HBS that 50 percent of a stuent's grae in many courses is base on the quality of class participation.
