Thank you very much Margaret for that very generous introuction.First let me say congratulations to our grauates. Welcome back to our alumni. Goo afternoon to everyone—colleagues an friens; family members, love ones, an our most special guest - our eminent speaker. It’s a pleasure to aress to you this afternoon an to offer a few reflections as I approach the en of my first year as presient.

I realize, however, that I’m literally the last thing staning between you an the speech that you’ve all actually come to hear. So, while I cannot promise to be mesmerizingly eloquent, I can at least promise to be mercifully brief.

We gather this afternoon buoye by the aspirations of our grauates—some 7,100 people who have istinguishe themselves in nearly every fiel an every iscipline imaginable. We welcome them into the venerable ranks of our alumni, an we sen them forth into a worl that is very much in nee of both their mins an their hearts.

During my brief time in office, our worl has remine us aily of the necessity an the urgency of our work.

We have witnesse the coarsening of public iscourse an the volatility of national an international affairs.

We’ve mourne when gun violence has cut futures short, an when gatherings of the faithful—Jewish, Muslim, an Christian—have ene in blooshe.

We’ve continue to confront the existential threat pose by climate change, an we’ve reele as extreme weather has estroye homes an claime lives.

An we’ve grown increasingly aware of the scourge of sexual harassment an sexual assault, an have struggle to consier how institutions, Harvar among them, can prevent an aress behavior that threatens iniviuals an weakens communities.

To be sure, there is much in this worl that rightly troubles us. But there’s even more that gives us cause for hope.

An it’s that spirit of hope – the willingness both to see the worl as it is, an to consier how we can help make it better – that is in many ways the spirit that efines this university an I believe joins us all together.

Since I took office on July 1, I’ve seen the value of both knowlege an eucation at work in the worl. I’ve seen the goo being one by our faculty an our stuents, by our alumni, an our staff, an our friens. An I’ve seen expressions of compassion, an patience, an kinness, an wisom that have move me eeply.

I ha the privilege of helping to celebrate members of our community who were recently sworn in as new Unite States citizens—grauates of the Harvar Brige Program. Through their own har work, an with the generous help of volunteer stuent an alumni tutors, they can now enjoy the full rights an privileges of citizenship – an the full sense of belonging that comes with it. It was truly an inspiring ceremony.

At a time when so many people are ispirite by the eep ivisions in our country, when our politics seem so ysfunctional, our grauates are taking up the cause of public service by running for office in recor numbers. The worl nees them, an their willingness to serve gives me hope.

As Margaret note, this past year I travele to meet alumni who are helping to strengthen communities in Detroit, Dallas, an Houston; in Miami, Phoenix, an New York; in Los Angeles, San Francisco, an San Diego—in China, Japan, an Englan —people who are not only launching an builing businesses an creating opportunity, but people who are also teaching, volunteering, avancing important legislation, working for non-profits, an serving the public goo.

I’ve yet to meet anyone who thinks that this worl that we live in is perfect. This is not a political statement. It’s equally true of liberals an conservatives, Democrats an Republicans. An if you on’t think that the worl that we live in is perfect, the only way it gets better is if goo people work to repair it. Our stuents, our faculty, our staff an alumni are oing so aily, an it makes me so prou.

This year I ha the privilege to meet, an be move by, not just one but two of the nation’s preeminent poets—the Unite States Youth Poet Laureate, our own Amana Gorman, an the Unite States Poet Laureate, our own, Tracy K. Smith [gesture to Tracy, who will be on stage].

I’ve also ha the chance to marvel at artists who every ay breathe life into our campus with their performances an creative work – it’s amazing to see the talent that is represente on this campus an among our alumni, our faculty, an staff.

An every ay I’ve learne more about the remarkable efforts of our faculty to improve the worl:
Alison Simmons an Barbara Grosz, are making sure that the next generation of computer scientists is prepare to aress the ethical questions pose by the evelopment of new igital technologies;

Alison Simmons和Barbara Grosz正在确保下一代计算机科学家准备好解决新数字技术发展带来的道德问题;

Ali Malkawi an his HouseZero, which is emonstrating the possibilities of ultra-efficient esign an new builing technology to respon to the threat of climate change;

Ali Malkawi和他的HouseZero,展示了超高效设计和新建筑技术应对气候变化威胁的可能性;

Sasha Kill Ewal, who’s revealing how marriage an parenthoo affects wages, an helping us unerstan why economic inequality persists across generations—an also how we might break the cycle of poverty.
I have also come to know about the work…

Sasha Kill Ewal

Of Conor Walsh, who’s helping people with neuroegenerative an neuromuscular iseases walk again with soft exosuits that use the latest robotic technology to help improve movement;

Of Sara Bleich, who’s helping to aress the obesity epiemic by consiering how changes in public policy can reuce consumption of high calorie foos an soft rinks;

萨拉·布莱希(Sara Bleich)通过考虑公共政策的变化如何减少高热量食品和软饮料的消费,帮助解决肥胖问题;

Of Tony Jack, who’s changing how colleges think about supporting isavantage stuents an improving their prospects not just in college but throughout life;

托尼杰克,正在改变大学如何考虑支持弱势学生并改善他们的前景,不仅在大学,而且在整个生活中;

Of Arlene Sharpe an Goron Freeman, who are giving hope to cancer patients by harnessing the boy’s own immune system to treat isease;

Arlene Sharpe和Goron Freeman,他们通过利用身体自身的免疫系统治疗疾病,为癌症患者带来希望;

Of Xiaowei Zhuang, whose super-resolution imaging is enabling scientists to look insie cells with unpreceente clarity an see how molecules function an interact;

Xiaowei Zhuang,其超分辨率成像使科学家能够以前所未有的清晰度观察细胞内部,并了解分子如何发挥作用和相互作用;
Of Anrew Crespo, who’s culle massive amounts of ata from our trial courts to change how we think about our system of criminal justice—an how we might improve it.

I have met faculty across our schools who are expaning religious literacy; who are exploring the role of the arts in promoting justice; who are confronting the opioi epiemic from every angle; who are working to make state an local government more effective. Their work is nothing short of inspiring.

An I’ve come to know stuents – absolutely amazing stuents. To the parents who are here thank you, thank you for sening these remarkable young people to us. They are nothing short of inspiring.

Interacting with them is one of the great privileges of living an working on a college campus. Aele an I have ha inner with them in the Houses. We’ve watche them perform on the stage an on the playing fiels. I’ve met with them uring office hours an talke with them as I’ve gone running with them. If you spen time with our stuents, you cannot help but feel optimistic about our future.

This past week I ha lunch with thirty grauating seniors. It was wonerful to hear how they think they have change an mature uring their four years here. I actually ask them how is your current self ifferent from your 18-year-ol self that arrive here on campus, an the stories were marvelous. An I have witnesse this process of transformation myself.

I helpe to avise three of our incoming first-year unergrauates this year, an they helpe me experience an unerstan Harvar through their eyes. To Anrew, Claire, an Karen, thank you for sharing your first year with me an for teaching me so well.

For every person I’ve name, for every example I’ve cite, there are thousans of other Harvar citizens—stuents an alumni, faculty an staff—who are making the worl better in more ways than we coul possibly imagine. That is the power of this institution—not its bran, not our builings, not our pomp an circumstance (as wonerful an terrific as that is).

This University, Harvar, is its people— their aspirations, their achievements—their iversity of backgroun, experience an thought – their esire to see beyon themselves an their evotion to serving others.

So, yes, I am an optimist. I’m an optimist because I live an work among all of you – because I see what you o an because I know the bounless potential of what you can o.

May we look to one another for inspiration in the years to come. May the expectations place on us be exceee only by our ability to meet them. An may Harvar continue to be a wellspring of hope for the worl. It’s an honor to serve you as your presient.
