戏剧的表演形式多种多样，常见的包括话剧、歌剧、舞剧、音乐剧、木偶戏等。由于文化背景的差别，不同文化所产生戏剧形式往往拥有独特的传统和程式。
戏剧专业的涉猎领域很广，小专业分支包括：
导演Directing；
表演 Acting；
设计 Design(包括：舞台设计Scenic esign、舞台服装设计 Costume Design、灯光设计Lighting Design、投影设计Projection Design、音响设计Soun Design)；
戏剧写作Playwriting；
舞台管理Stage Management；
Theatre Management剧务管理；
Dramaturgy/Performance Stuies舞台表演理论研究。
二；戏剧专业留学如何准备？
打算申请研究生的同学首先要保证本科成绩，均分尽量要在80分＋，基础理论需要学扎实，同时准备托福考试，因为一般艺术类学生语言都不太好，所以最好大一就开始了解托福考试，这样有充足时间来考过托福。关于GRE的要求，除了舞台表演理论研究Dramaturgy/Performance Stuies需要提供GRE成绩，其他专业选择一般都不需要GRE。戏剧专业同学留学申请中，作品集非常重要。申请导演的学生需要提供作品，根据学校要求，可以把作品刻成DVD翻译之后，邮寄给学校。设计类的学生也需要提供作品集，并且演示作品创作过程，做成PDF文件，上传给学校。戏剧类留学申请中另外重要的一个环节就是面试，面试的形式可能是一对一，也可能是一对多，也需要申请者提前准备。
